COVID-19 vs The Caribbean: Confirmed Cases as at May 1 2020

I’ll be publishing a weekly snapshot showing the reported number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 across the Caribbean. The April 24 snapshot can be found here.

Things to note:

1. I define the Caribbean as member and associate member states of CARICOM.
2. The focus is on reported confirmed cases only. However, the number of reported confirmed cases do not represent all cases, just the ones that were reported and tested positive. Furthermore, testing rules and availability may vary by country.
3. There are three data sources that I use: World Health Organization Daily Situation Reports, John Hopkins COVID-19 Map, and Loop News.
4. The above sources are checked every Friday night (before 12 AM) – with data being keyed into an Excel spreadsheet.
5. This post is divided into 4 sections. Section 1 looks at the total number of reported confirmed COVID-19 cases across CARICOM (table).
6. Section 2 looks at the % change in reported confirmed cases between April 17 and April 24 (tables).
7. Section 3 looks at a) the total number of reported confirmed COVID-19 cases and b) the number of cases by CARICOM country (charts).
8. Section 4 looks at the number of reported confirmed COVID-19 cases by CARICOM country (tables and charts).

SUMMARY

1. Countries showing steady flattening/smoothing of their respective curves over the last two to four weeks based on a) no new reported confirmed cases and/or b) very slight increase in new reported confirmed cases: Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Montserrat, Dominica, Belize, Barbados, Antigua & Barbuda and Anguilla.
2. While the total number of reported confirmed cases across CARICOM continues to increase, the % change in total cases from one week to the next is decreasing.
3. However, the reasons behind the above changes are not clear. For example, the decrease/flattening might be attributed to less testing being done, fewer people becoming infected and showing symptoms due to social distancing measures, or some who are infected but are asymptomatic et cetera, et cetera.
