Technology & Digital Transformation

🇬🇾 Guyana highlights skills, connectivity and local innovation in “Digital Guyana” push

Guyana’s government used the September 7 closing of its 2026 Innovation Challenge to reaffirm its digital-transformation agenda, linking the programme to investment in skills, connectivity, entrepreneurship and locally developed technology solutions. Prime Minister Mark Phillips said the initiative forms part of a broader effort to build a “smarter, safer and more connected” country and strengthen Guyanese innovation capacity.

Why it matters: Guyana’s rapid economic expansion is increasingly being paired with public-sector investment in digital capability and human capital. For Caribbean executives and policymakers, the emphasis on domestic innovation rather than technology consumption alone is notable.

Business & Investment

🌎 CIBC Caribbean reports 46% rise in nine-month profit

CIBC Caribbean Bank reported net income of US$167.7 million for the nine months ended July 31, up US$53 million, or 46%, from the comparable period a year earlier. The bank attributed its performance to revenue, loan and deposit growth as well as continued execution of strategic priorities including digital capabilities and operational resilience.

Why it matters: CIBC Caribbean operates across multiple regional markets, making its performance a useful signal for banking-sector conditions, credit activity and the continuing investment Caribbean financial institutions are making in digital channels and resilience.

🇻🇨 St. Vincent and the Grenadines launches five-year enterprise-development strategy

With Caribbean Development Bank support, the Centre for Enterprise Development unveiled a 2026–2030 strategic plan aimed at improving support for entrepreneurs and MSMEs in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The plan includes a five-year US$4.64 million investment programme, with US$3.3 million earmarked for entrepreneurship development, alongside work on access to finance, investment readiness and institutional capacity.

Why it matters: MSME financing and business-support capacity remain persistent constraints across the Caribbean. The plan is especially relevant as St. Vincent and the Grenadines prepares for a National Development Bank and seeks a stronger pipeline of investment-ready businesses.

🇬🇾 Guyana businesses urged to tap £3 billion UK export-finance support

Guyana’s Senior Finance Minister Ashni Singh encouraged local firms to explore financing opportunities available through a £3 billion UK Export Finance facility during a September 9 private-sector workshop in Georgetown. The support can help finance procurement of equipment, technology, products and services, with priority areas including renewable energy, transport infrastructure, healthcare and agriculture.

Why it matters: Guyana’s investment cycle continues to create unusually large financing and procurement opportunities by Caribbean standards. Access to UK-backed credit could widen the pool of capital available to firms participating in infrastructure and productive-sector projects.

🇧🇧 Barbados enterprise agencies taking 60 businesses to New York trade show

FundAccess announced that 60 businesses selected through Barbadian enterprise-development agencies and New York-based entities will participate in a September trade show in Brooklyn marking Barbados’ 60th anniversary of independence. Organisers say the event is intended to help firms test product demand, obtain buyer feedback and connect with distributors and investors.

Why it matters: For small Caribbean firms, overseas market access is often constrained less by product creation than by distribution, buyer relationships and market validation. The initiative gives Barbadian SMEs a structured opportunity to test export potential in a major diaspora market.

Government, Policy & Public Sector

🇱🇨 Saint Lucia begins comprehensive revision of Labour Act

Saint Lucia’s Department of Labour has begun a comprehensive review of the country’s Labour Act, with stakeholder consultations already under way involving the Chamber of Commerce, the Saint Lucia Hospitality and Tourism Association and civil society. The government says the review is intended to modernise labour legislation and make it more responsive to changes in the world of work.

Why it matters: Labour-law reform can directly affect employers, workers, investment conditions and operating costs. The review also comes as Caribbean labour markets are being reshaped by remote work, digitalisation, changing employment models and skills shortages.
